Celebrating International Women’s Day Through Intergenerational Wellbeing
EMAGE at Redbridge Central Library
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, EMAGE CIC proudly participated in a community celebration organised by Vision Redbridge Culture & Leisure at Redbridge Central Library. The event brought together women from different generations to celebrate strength, wellbeing, and community connection.
EMAGE joined the event as a collaborative partner, setting up a stall to introduce visitors to the organisation’s mission of supporting healthy and active ageing within ethnic minority communities. Many attendees visited the stall to learn about EMAGE’s vision, upcoming wellbeing programmes, and opportunities for community participation and volunteering.
Intergenerational Chair Yoga Session
As part of the celebrations, EMAGE conducted a special intergenerational Chair Yoga session, bringing together children, youth, and older women in a shared space of movement, relaxation, and connection.
Chair yoga provided a gentle and accessible way for participants of all abilities to engage in physical activity. Through simple seated movements, stretching, and breathing exercises, participants experienced the benefits of mindful movement while also enjoying the warmth of intergenerational interaction.
At EMAGE, we believe that ageing is a lifelong process, and the habits we develop earlier in life influence our wellbeing in later years. Intergenerational activities such as this help build understanding, empathy, and shared learning between generations.
The session reflects principles from established ageing theories such as Activity Theory and Continuity Theory, which suggest that individuals who remain physically, socially, and mentally active throughout their life course are more likely to maintain health, independence, and wellbeing in later life.
Building Communities that Age Well
The International Women’s Day celebration also highlighted the importance of community spaces where women of all ages can come together, share experiences, and support one another.
Through initiatives like intergenerational wellness sessions, EMAGE aims to:
•Encourage active and healthy ageing
•Strengthen connections between generations
•Promote community participation and social wellbeing
•Create inclusive opportunities for women from diverse cultural backgrounds
Events such as this demonstrate how local partnerships and community collaboration can create meaningful opportunities for wellbeing and social connection.
A Message for Women Everywhere
As part of the celebration, EMAGE extends its warm wishes to women everywhere:
EMAGE wishes all women of every age a very Happy International Women’s Day. May we continue to celebrate the wisdom, strength, and resilience of women across generations.
